As the world pivots towards a greener future, rare earth elements (REEs) and magnets have emerged as essential components in the energy transition. They are crucial for technologies like electric vehicles, wind turbines, and clean hydrogen solutions. However, the EU's dependence on imports for 90% of its REEs highlights a pressing need for local expertise and innovation. With recycling rates for REEs currently below 5%, there is a significant opportunity for growth and development in this area.

In December 2024, Domel will celebrate a significant milestone: 50 years of partnership with our longest-standing customer, Electrolux (formerly AEG), and 50 years since the development of our first vacuum units. This journey is a testament to innovation, resilience and achievement.

The MEDICA 2024 trade fair is behind us, and we are excitedly reflecting on all the impressions we gathered. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia yesterday, September 10, 2024, awarded national honors to the most innovative companies and innovators for the twenty-second time during the Day of Innovation at Brdo pri Kranju. These awards represent the highest recognition for the innovative achievements of Slovenian companies and promote innovation in Slovenia. 

The EUROBIKE fair is considered one of the largest and most important cycling fairs in the world. It is intended for manufacturers of bicycles and cycling equipment.

The laboratory program was also presented this year at Achema, the leading trade fair for chemical engineering, environmental protection, and biotechnology.

The CCE (China Clean EXPO) trade fair is the largest trade fair in the cleaning industry in China, where we showcased our range of vacuum unit products.

MCE fair is a professional trade fair for sanitary equipment, installations, heating, air conditioning, and renewable energy sources.

Coiltech is an international trade fair dedicated to showcasing technologies and materials for the production of electric motors.

Once again, this year, as part of the collective representation of Slovenian companies, we showcased our products at the Arab Health exhibition in Dubai.

EC Systems, a business unit operating independently since 1998 under the able leadership of Mr Lojze Demšar, stands out as one of the most successful units within the Domel company. EC Systems manages its own sales, development, technology and quality control, while central services like planning, procurement and logistics support them.   Team and Work Environment Currently, around 70 dedicated employees are involved in EC Systems’ programmes, primarily hailing from the Selška Dolina region and the vicinity of Škofja Loka. They operate cohesively as a team, conducting regular monthly programme meetings and weekly troubleshooting sessions. The department maintains a seamless flow of information, fostering a productive working atmosphere. At the end of each year, the sales, development and production leaders present the results of the past year and outline plans for the upcoming year to all employees, including production workers. This inclusive approach ensures that everyone understands their roles and contributions. Additionally, the team comes together twice a year for a summer picnic and a pre-New Year celebration. In the winter, some colleagues even gather for Tuesday evening football matches, strengthening their bonds outside of work.   Applications EC Systems predominantly specializes in fume extraction systems , followed by industrial vacuum cleaners, fuel cells, washing disinfectors and printing machines. Over the last three years, they have actively engaged in hydrogen technology, offering comprehensive solutions for air supply and pumps for hydrogen recirculation. This commitment aligns with their efforts to contribute to a greener future by reducing carbon footprints and preserving the environment for future generations.     Major Markets In 2023, the largest markets for EC Systems are:     Products EC blowers find applications wherever: a) long lifetime is essential, with their minimum expected operational time of 20,000 hours;   b) where the absence of brush dust is required, unlike traditional vacuum units; c) precision control is required. The EC blower&pump product range covers various voltages (low voltage, high voltage, DC and AC), with blowers ranging up to 2,500W in power. A global EC blower has been introduced operating at 100–240V, along with CAN communication capabilities for seamless integration with other systems. Innovations EC Systems actively fosters innovation, generating numerous proposals, some of which have received awards. Notably, two Gold Award recipients hail from this business unit. Business Facilities Since July 2020, a new expansion has been in place to accommodate increased production needs. Production EC Systems establish a flexible medium-volume production approach, enabling the assembly of various products within a single shift. Since 2014, they’ve operated on two shifts. This year is expected to see a production increase of approximately 10%. They produce over 300 different blower concepts, necessitating an exceptionally flexible production process.   Sales and Development Regular market trend monitoring guides EC Systems’ sales strategy, with a focus on identifying market needs before embarking on new product development. They currently serve over 250 different customers. All aspects of product development, including electronics and motor development, are carried out in-house. The development encompasses mechanical, electrical and software aspects.

Let’s take a closer look at why the e-bike is so amazing. It contributes to sustainable mobility and also helps improve the health of individuals and of society as a whole. Their CO2 emissions are low because they don’t produce direct exhaust gases or particles. This improves air quality. Domel encourages its employees to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle in their free time. It places great emphasis on recreation, to which it gives substantial financial support. We help finance recreational activities away from the workplace, including skiing, swimming and group recreation in sports halls. We also co-finance massages, visits to the sauna, and holiday accommodation by the sea and at spa resorts. We cover the registration fee in full for employees who wish to take part in running and cycling events, subsidise season tickets for the swimming pool, sauna and tennis facilities at Ratitovec institute, and provide vouchers for group exercise, fitness, massage and recreational swimming in Železniki, Škofja Loka and Kranj. During the summer months, we exercise and take part in various events at Selca sports park. Every year we organise an unforgettable employee picnic, which provides a perfect mix of entertainment and sport. In the autumn and winter we organise group recreation, where employees can play badminton, table tennis, five-a-side football, volleyball or basketball for free. There can be no excuse for not taking part in fitness or group activities on grounds of price, as we provide vouchers that keep costs to a minimum. Not only do they reduce CO2 emissions, but they also provide long-term benefits for individuals and the environment. Domel is Unaffected by Severe Floods in Slovenia

We have been active in the automotive industry market since 2004. During this time, we have partnered with renowned car manufacturers and manufacturers of components for the industry. The products are the result of our own development and technologies, and are integrated in virtually all cars throughout the world.

Digitalisation was the main theme of this year's Domel Awards.

Domel is showcasing its ultra-high efficiency EC motors at the ISH trade fair in Frankfurt under the slogan "Solutions for a Sustainable Future".

Domel from Železniki and Cult from Logatec are working together to develop electric bikes – the former supplying a mid-drive it has developed itself and the latter developing and assembling the bikes themselves. The bikes are 100% the result of Slovenian expertise and know-how, making them more than worthy of the title ‘Made in Slovenia’.

The theme of this year's award ceremony was very topical: sustainable development.

Domel has manufacturing plants in six locations: four in Slovenia, one in Serbia and one in China.

Greater energy efficiency, more cost-saving opportunities and EU regulations led Domel to develop the new Wet & Dry Vacuum motor.

In about a year we will be cruising the streets on “Dreem” electric kick scooters, which will be powered by innovative Domel in-wheel motors with permanent magnets. And when riding them, we will be using impact-absorbing smart helmets.

Domel’s guiding principle, which we have pursued since our beginnings, is to develop and produce environmentally friendly products. One of our company’s market segments is electronically commutated (EC) motors. Due to their savings in electric power consumption, their efficiencies are proportionally reflected in reduced greenhouse gas emissions and a lower environmental impact. In particular EC drive systems intended for use in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) rank among the top five consumers of electricity. Due to their continuous (24/7) operation, energy consumption is even more important in the applications in which such motors are used.

In cooperation with its partners, Domel has developed one of the most powerful hybrid central drives for e-bikes. The 700W power can hold for 200 seconds. The electric drive provides additional assistance to the cyclist when needed. The central drive is used for the extraordinary requirements of mountain biking and where the energy efficiency and responsiveness of the whole set are important. The responsiveness of the engine depends on the intensity with which the user applies pressure on the pedals.

Together with Elaphe, Domel developed the TFM (transversal flux) motor for electric kick scooters. The objective of the project was to develop the lightest and most efficient motor.

Domel’s permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) motors are developed to offer and guarantee ultra-high performance at the IE5 efficiency level (and above), and a maintenance-free long lifetime.

The future is with ultra-high efficiency motors. The Domel motor is the most efficient industrial motor ever produced in serial production1, and therefore ideal for use in data centres.

Domel solutions are known for their high efficiency, low noise and low vibrations. 

Brushless DC motors We produce brushed and brushless DC motors. There are many advantages of brushless DC motors compared to brushed motors, including longer runtime, more power, and longer lifetime. A drill with a brushless motor adjusts its speed, torque, and power supply to match the task at hand. A brushed drill requires new brushes after every few hundred hours of use, but brushless models don’t have any brushes that need replacement.
